The first production year for the Chevrolet El Camino was 1959 with the idea of competing with the Ford Ranchero. The El Camino was based on the Chevy Brookwood Wagon and was available with a Turbo-jet 283 and choice of a 2 bbl. or 4 bbl. carburetor. A 348 Turbo-thrust with tri power (three 2 bbl.) carbs. I’m not sure how many were made, but the ultimate optional engine was the 290 hp Corvette 283 engine with Ramjet fuel injection. Several transmission options were offered from the Powerglide 2 speed automatic to a 4 spd. manual.
